Selector School: Teaching your Team How to Build a Collection of the Future

Collection development and selection is an evolving process that requires on the job education and training, and there are few opportunities for librarians to effectively learn how to build a collection relevant for their population. This program will give participants the tools needed to implement a training program at their own library that will explore collection development from a top-level perspective as well as a close-up view of how to implement day-to-day practices that will help align the selection of resources with the curriculum and mission of the institution. This program will contain a sample training session on effective resource allocation, strategies for selection and assessment, and tools for locating books and resources.

Target Audience:

New(er) law librarians, librarians new(er) to collection development, law library directors or collection team leads who are looking to revamp their collection development policy or move in a different direction, libraries with no formal collection development team, libraries facing budget cuts, and libraries who are looking to diversify their library collection.

Takeaways:

  • Participants will be able to diversify their library collections with regards to authors, publishers, subjects that have been historically overlooked, and to break through implicit bias to repair the holes that have been created in past collection development.
  • Participants will learn how to develop an instructional program to build the skills of librarians at every level and from all backgrounds, foster mentorship relationships between experienced selectors and those new to collection development, and how to identify the resources needed for all patron types.
  • Participants will learn strategies to assess their collection and selection process, to create actionable plans based on that assessment, and how to represent the library's value to stakeholders.
