A Rose By Any Other Name: Charting a New Path Toward Career Fulfillment

What makes people choose a new path, and why? What can managers do to understand that? This panel is not designed to air grievances or find fault: it is designed to allow professionals at varying stages of their careers to share their (often complicated) experiences in finding their own way. Especially when they are still not quite sure where that path will lead. The audience will have the opportunity to hear from panelists from all three branches of law librarianship, and especially panelists who benefitted from a change from one type of law librarianship to another.

Target Audience:

Everyone. Early-stage librarians should hear about why people changed paths. People who did so should be able to provide important commentary in small groups. Managers should listen, but also be able to counsel in meaningful ways.

Takeaways:

  • Participants will be able to think critically about where they are right now and where they would like to be (especially long-term goals).
  • Participants will be able to articulate why the people they work for might not understand those goals.
  • Participants who supervise people will be more adept at hearing/soliciting individual long-term goals and incorporating those into management plans in order to retain talent. Managers will gain coaching skills and an enhanced ability to assist employees in charting their career path.
