What is Legal Technology Competency?: A Model Framework

In the past decade-plus, many law schools have attempted to integrate technology into legal education while law firm technology use has accelerated rapidly. Yet no clear framework for legal technology literacy has been developed. The meaning of the phrases "technology competency" and "legal technology" vary widely across the legal industry. This program will present a standard framework for evaluating legal technology competency. The framework will provide a baseline for assessing competency in all lawyers, from law students to experienced lawyers. Legal technology literacy is much more than knowledge about software or systems and their applications. Technologically literate lawyers will have developed real-world knowledge about accessing, evaluating, integrating, and creating technology solutions through problem-solving and critical thinking. Competencies will be presented in easily digestible categories to allow for simple application by educators, practitioners, and innovators.

Law firm, court, government, and academic law librarians interested in or responsible for technology assessment and training.

  • Participants will be able to identify desired baseline legal technology competencies as well as higher-level competencies specific to particular roles or areas of practice that can be applied to law students and new and experienced lawyers.
